Yeah, this is a bit out of my niche where writing is concerned, but this is my blog and I’ll write what I want to!  Today was Opening Day for my beloved Cardinals!  Ah, Spring is definitely in the air now that baseball is back!

The Cardinals had a great game from four guys they will need to have great seasons.  Albert Pujols went 4 for 5 with two homers, Yadier Molina got his first career grand slam, Colby Rasmus added a solo shot and Chris Carpenter went six pretty good innings.  The Redbirds beat the Reds at the Great American Small-park 11-6.  I say Small-park because the liner that was Albert’s 2nd homer of the game may not have been a homer elsewhere and the slam that Yadi hit barely cleared the wall in right field and may have been an out in any other park.  Oh well – you play the park the way it’s built and the GAB has always been a hitter’s haven.

I have to admit that I am concerned about the Cards’ bullpen.  Jason Motte still looks like he should be pitching at A ball until he develops another pitch or two.  The dude could throw the ball through a wall with the heat that he delivers, but his fastball is too straight and he’ll never make much of a living with it.  Ryan Franklin pitched more like Ben Franklin today, carrying over from a sorry end to last season.  We have a rotation that will be killer, but that does us no good if the pen blows it in the end.  The Birds won’t always score eleven runs for the pen to play with.  They will actually need to pitch in the late innings in order to eek out some wins once in a while.

True enough, it is Opening Day.  All in all I was happy with the performance of the Redbirds.  Let’s see how Adam Wainwright does Wednesday night.  I hope that he can get in some quality innings and El Birdos keep putting good wood on the baseball!  Only 161 more to go – as Waino said in the interview he did – let’s hope they play through October and not just to October this year!
